Five Useful CSS Properties

In this post I will discuss about five very simple yet useful CSS properties. You may be very familiar with some of them but actual object of this post is effective use of those properties which are supported by almost all browsers. So let’s start with display
1. Display property
This is very useful and commonly used property. There are two types of elements (in a way).
1. Blocked Elements, which normally rendered on a new line always, for example <div>, <h1> and <p> etc.
2. Inline Elements, which normally rendered in a single/same line, for example <em>, <span> and <strong> etc.
You can override the display style by specifying display: inline or block.

2. CSS Clip
Clip property, in the rule definition dialog box under the positioning tab, behave similar to a mask. You can mask the content of an element in a rectangular shape. To clip an element: you must specify the position to absolute. Then, specify the top, right, bottom, and left value relative to the element.
Example Image Clip
This example explains how to mask an image using clip property. Main <div> tag’s property of position set its value to relative (position: relative;). Then specify the <img> element to position: absolute and the rect values accordingly.

Example of Image Resize and Clip
In this example, I’m going to show you how to resize and clip images. My original images are in rectangle format. I want to scale it down by 50% to create a thumbnail gallery in a square format. So, I used the width and height property to resize the images and mask them with the clip property. Then, I used the left property to shift the images to the left by 15px.

3. Min-height
As its name is self explanatory that it specifies the minimum height of an element. It is very useful in balancing the layouts, giving same minimum height gives symmetry to the over all look and feel.

IE6 is not supporting min-height property but don’t worry, Designing Mall has a code to solve with this issue

4. White-space
The white-space property specifies how white-space is handled in an element. For example, specify white-space: nowrap will prevent the text from wrapping to next line.

5. Cursor
When you alter the behavior of a button, it is very appropriate that you change its cursor too. Suppose a button is in the state of disabled, the cursor display should change to default arrow to show that it is not possible at this time to click. So the Cursor property is useful for web applications
